Antun Sorkocevic

Antun Sorkočević (also known as Anton Sorkočević), born in 1730 in Dubrovnik (then part of the Republic of Ragusa), was a prominent Croatian composer, conductor, and music theorist of the Baroque and early Classical periods. He is primarily known for his contributions to vocal and instrumental music, with a particular focus on sacred and secular choral works. Sorkočević's notable works include his collection of cantatas and his operas, with “Evanđelist” and “Jelisaveta” being among the most significant. His compositions often reflect the stylistic traits of the late Baroque while also incorporating early Classical elements, showcasing an evolution in musical form and expression. In addition to his compositions, Sorkočević played a crucial role in the development of music education in Croatia and contributed to the establishment of music life in Dubrovnik.
